Located 30 kilometers from Ninh Binh city, Kim Don village is well known for its high-quality sedge handicraft products. The seagrass tree appeared in Kim Son, Ninh Binh about 2 centuries ago. From that time on, this tree has become the leading industrial tree of this land. Kim Son people used seagrass to create many products such as: mat, carpet, baskets, tray, box, plate, glass, cup, handbag, hats,… that are strong, attractive and have high economic value.

Kim Son District had a total area of 384,3ha for growing sedge plants with two seasons of crops. The production of split and dried sedge has reached 3,125 tonnes/year.

To make a beautiful sedge handicraft product, it requires special techniques in sedge growing and production. It is a precise, detailed process, from the first step of growing and then harvesting, selecting, splitting, drying, and dyeing sedge to the last step of weaving and completing the products.

Sedge mats knitted in Kim Son strong and beautiful. To knit the mat, people have to dye the sedge carefully to prevent the mats from being faded easily. Craftspeople have to knit quickly and exactly. The eye-catching patterns on the mats express the talent of the craftspeople.
